This website aims to compile all (freely) available information about the history and personalities of the Cudlip(p) surname. There are currently several hundred Cudlip(p) families spread around the world, but mainly in the UK, USA and Canada, and some in Australia and New Zealand. There are two main forms of the surname, namely, Cudlip and Cudlipp and these are currently divided more-or-less equally. Both forms have the same heritage, being associated with the small settlement of Cudlipptown on the edge of Dartmoor and near Tavistock, a thriving market town in Devon in the UK. The spelling across families became more consistent in the 1700’s with only occasional swapping from one spelling to the other.
Sometimes, particularly in Cornwall and London, Cudlip was recorded as Cutlip, but this tends to be an exception. These Cutlip are included in the analysis. In the USA, there appears to be a completely separate line of Cutlip with a different European heritage. This line is not dealt with here.
The website contains diagrammatic representation of several family trees with a focus on the period before 1851, but with more current extension for some families. It also contains listings of all the Cudlip(p) in the UK 1851, 1911, 1921and 1939 Census. Brief details of some famous Cudlip(p) are also given.
The website was started on 16 June 2021and was significantly updated in Jan 2022 with the addition of the TNG_database, which allows searching for a specific name. Later updates are recorded in the Notes section.
